Most of our customers are interested in opening a Czech currency account in different currencies. In practice, it seems that each bank has different conditions for opening a foreign currency account. Some banks require a personal account to open, others get a foreign currency account for free with a personal account, and others open a foreign currency account only in selected currencies.
Česká spořitelna
It is the largest and most popular bank in the Czech Republic. It is part of the Erste Group. We have many years of experience with the bank and highly recommend it to all our customers. There are two options for opening a foreign currency account.
Account Plus
You can open a Plus account, which you can have for free if you make at least 4 completed card payments per month, otherwise 100 CZK per month. In addition to this account, you have one currency account and two debit cards free of charge. The fee for cash withdrawals from ATMs abroad is 25 CZK per month.
Standard account and related foreign currency account
You can also open a foreign currency account that will be linked to your personal account(Standard Account). You can open a Standard account free of charge at a Česká spořitelna branch. You will receive one free debit card for your personal account, which is held in Czech crowns. It is also possible to open a currency account for this account in EUR, USD, CHF, GBP, CAD, DKK, SEK, PLN, HUF, JPY, for which there is a monthly fee of CZK 25.
Multi-currency function
With one debit card, you can conveniently pay in all currencies in which you have accounts. When withdrawing cash or making a payment in a country where the payment is made in the currency in which you have a foreign currency account, the bank will debit the required amount from the specified account. Otherwise, the bank will debit the required amount in Czech crowns from the account. The feature applies to all debit cards issued to a specific account. For the Plus account, the feature is free of charge; for the Standard account, the service fee is CZK 29 per month.
Whether you decide to open a foreign currency account with Česká spořitelna in the first or second way, you must have your identity document with you and give the bank employee the reason why you want to open a foreign currency account.
